Oysters are filter feeders, "filter[ing] small particles and even toxins out of the water to improve water quality," (ThoughtCo). They are so good at filtering water, in fact, that an adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day! To help facilitate oyster growth, MORI collects oyster shells from local restaurants, dried out for 6 months to eliminate bacteria, and then packaged into reef bags. These reef bags create the perfect environment for new oysters to grow. The impact of oyster restoration isn't just limited isn't just limited to water quality: "the structures reduce wave energy and shoreline erosion, providing natural protection against the severe weather events that threaten coastal communities" (ABC).
