MORI began in 2025, when water quality in the St. Lucie River and Estuary was severely affected by the continued discharges of water from Lake Okeechobee. They have since then stopped, yet water quality remains an important issue, not just to the inhabitants of the river, but those who live by it. MORI was founded by a rower wary of bacterial warnings, the former director of the Florida Oceanographic Society's oyster restoration program, and the leader of an independent oyster restoration program. MORI works with local high schools to help collect and dry out the oysters, and is currently conducting operations on the campus of South Fork High School.
